faster internet is coming.

702 is excited to be bringing Fiber to the Home to your area!

What is Fiber to the Home (FTTH)? First, optical fiber is a very thin strand of flexible glass in a protective sheath capable of transmitting signals. Fiber connectivity is the fastest way to get a device such as your TV to receive information from a server, like one of Netflix’s servers, to stream a movie. Older systems relied on copper wire or satellites to connect people to the internet. Fiber to the home means just that; the primary internet cable connects to your house.

Older internet technologies would connect a household to a shared network. Another way to think of it is that someone with fiber to the home doesn’t have to “share” internet speeds with their neighbors. That’s why we can confidently say your internet will be Faster Than Fargo, because most of those residents have to share with everyone else on the block or in an apartment.

Sign Up Early and 702 Communications will waive the $50 installation fee.

Plus…If you give us permission to build to your home while we’re doing primary construction, we won’t charge you a penny.

Why is FTTH worth it?

The speed is fantastic, but the biggest reason to get FTTH internet is the Reliability. Satellite internet services and cellphones send signals into the sky. Anyone who lives around here knows the skies aren’t always friendly when it comes to thunderstorms and blizzards. If you’re thinking that wi-fi is sending signals through the air, remember that those signals are within your home, connecting to a router, which connects to fiber, that’s buried safely underground.

How much does ftth cost?

Cost per month:

50Mb/50Mb……………………….$57.99
100Mb/100Mb…………………….$79.99
250Mb/250Mb…………………….$99.99

500Mb/500Mb…………………..$149.99
1Gb/1Gb………………………….$199.99

50Mb/50Mb……………………….$57.99
100Mb/100Mb…………………….$79.99
250Mb/250Mb…………………….$99.99
500Mb/500Mb…………………..$149.99
1Gb/1Gb………………………….$199.99

The last thing you want during bad weather is an inability to communicate or receive important, up-to-the-minute information.

How much does it cost to build the network?

702 Communications and the State of Minnesota are investing a combined $3.5 million dollars to bring this connectivity to your homes. Whether you intend to subscribe to 702 Communications or not, if you give us permission to build to your home while we’re doing primary construction, we won’t charge you a penny. If you opt out of letting us build to your home during the project, but someday down the road decide you want service, it may cost thousands of dollars for that same fiber construction/connectivity.

When is this happening?

We know snow is coming, so we’ll start when the ground thaws. We anticipate the project beginning early summer 2024. We’ll stay in touch and you can always call or send us a message about our progress.

Where is all the network going?

Those Were the Basics. Here Are Answers to Questions a Little More in The Weeds.

Will it affect my land?

No. 702 is a utility like any other and our fiber will be built in utility easements, generally two to three feet deep.

Where do the cables go on my property?

We’ll work with you to design the route for fiber to your home. We’ll need to understand if there are other utility lines to avoid as well as any septic or sprinkler systems.

Does FTTH mean drilling into my house?

Yes. In order to bring fiber into your home, we’ll need to penetrate a wall to do so. This would be something we consult with you on to determine the best location for that penetration.

Can I get FTTH to a business in town?

702 Communications has been providing fiber optic connectivity to businesses and apartments in the Fargo-Moorhead area for 25 years and would be happy to have a discussion with you about building to your business as well.

Are you a new company?

702 Communications celebrates 25 years in 2024.

We understand if you haven’t heard of us, as we mainly provide internet to businesses and apartment residents in Fargo, Moorhead, and West Fargo. While bringing internet to your region is new to us, our experience with internet technology goes way back.

We’ve laid hundreds of miles of cable throughout the F-M area, serving thousands of customers. We’ve been in this field a long time and look forward to serving you soon.

Who should I contact to ask questions, learn about progress, and keep tabs on the project?

You can call our customer service department any time for information about our offerings and our progress at 218.284.5702.

Do I have to pay specials?

No. This project is entirely funded by 702 Communications and the State of Minnesota.

Do I even have a choice?

Yes. We need your permission to bury any fiber optic cable on your property. But again, we would encourage you to allow construction to your home during this project even if you don’t want service today. We’ll build to your home for free during our main construction. Should you change your mind down the road, there may be a significant fee for that connectivity.

Can I get FTTH to my shop or other structure on my property?

Yes! If you sign up for service, we’ll be happy to bring fiber to additional structures for a small monthly fee.

Why are there two numbers in the speed and why should I care?

The first number is the download speed, and the second number is the upload speed. Most internet providers only talk about the download speed. You’ve probably heard advertising say, “Get 100 Mb for only $44.95 per month.” Again, that’s just the download speed.

Downloading is what most people do online. When someone goes to Google and types in a search, the internet browser is downloading all the pages with links that Google has to show. When streaming a movie or tv show, your device is downloading all that content.

Uploading means sending information to another party. When someone types in a search, they send a tiny bit of information to Google compared to what Google sends back.

But times have changed.

People who upload large amounts of content online naturally prefer faster upload speeds. Gamers who play online are also uploading large amount of information and need fast upload speeds to avoid “lag” and lose the game. Those two examples seem like small audiences and they were until recently.

Video calls also rely on upload speed. Many of us are familiar with phrases like “You froze,” or “You cut out.” That could be due to poor upload speeds.

Another benefit, especially for those who primarily rely on cell phones, is that with FTTH you don’t have to use cellular data to FaceTime. Even with “unlimited” plans, some cell phone companies throttle down – a.k.a. provide slower service – after someone has used a certain amount of data.

FTTH with wi-fi won’t slow down and you will always get what you pay for.

Why should I sign up early?

Two reasons.

The first is that if you sign up early, we’ll waive the $50 application fee. Not bad.

The better reason is that we intend on serving regions with the most demand as we expand from our starting point. Should a lot of individuals in the eastern part register early, we’ll head that way. That also means it will take longer to go back west. You and your neighbors decide our direction.
